Subic Bay Naval Station closed on November 24, 1992. In the 1980s, Magsaysay Drive in Olongapo City was home to over 200 nightclubs. Today, the scene is much different. This video was shot in July 2014, showing the street scene two blocks north of the former base. For those familiar with the area, the video ends with a view of the American Legion building.

Want to know what it's like to ride in a tricycle? Check out this video from my family vacation in July 2014. My wife, parents, and my wife's cousin and I rode a trike from Malacañan Palace to Intramurous. Yep, that's six people (including the driver) on one bike. The video is a portion of that trip through the back streets of Manila.

Captain Richard Genet served as the USS Sterett's Commanding Officer from September 1986 to August 1988. During his time as CO, the Sterett was known as "The First Team," and the logo was emblazoned on our hats and coveralls (see picture of hat below).
Anyone who served on the Sterett during the Genet era will agree that it was their best days in the navy. At the 2015 Sterett reunion in Tacoma, Captain Genet talks about his time on the Sterett and the origin of The First Team slogan. |
